Dubrovnik 4 Day Itinerary
The longest stop on our honeymoon adventure was Dubrovnik, Croatia!! Most people haven’t heard of Dubrovnik, but if you’ve watched The Game of Thrones series then you’ve actually seen a lot of Old Town Dubrovnik!! Dubrovnik feels like a different era, the city walls and buildings have really stood the test of time. Dubrovnik is absolutely gorgeous and one of my favorite Croatian destinations!!
DAY 1: Old Town Dubrovnik

DAY ONE
I recommend starting your adventure by becoming familiar with the area by walking around Old Town Dubrovnik. Be sure to check out Stradun, which is the main street in Old Town Dubrovnik. It’s full of restaurants, shops, bakeries, bars, etc. I could spend hours just walking around Stradun and Old Town Dubrovnik. I love looking at the architecture and checking out all of the local shops.

Another great way to see the city is by walking along the city walls. We loved walking along the walls in the evenings. The views are amazing and we even found a cute little café to watch the sunset.

On your first evening in Dubrovnik, I recommend doing the Dubrovnik and Game of Thrones Walking Tour. During the day there are lots of cruise ships dropping off tourists, so the evening tours are typically less crowded. We absolutely loved our tour! We learned about the history of Dubrovnik and talked about some of the filming for The Game of Thrones.

DAY TWO
On your second day in Dubrovnik, I recommend purchasing a Day Trip to Montenegro. Our tour guides picked us up at Pile Gate just outside of Old Town Dubrovnik. Then they drove us to Kotor, where we got to spend a few hours on our own touring the city.

We spent out time in Kotor just walking around the city to see the highlights. We tried to hike the city walls up to St. John’s fortress, but we quickly changed our mind. It was a gorgeous view but it was hot and I wasn’t wearing good hiking shoes. Okay fine I’ll admit it, I was wearing sandals. We also didn’t have enough time to hike to the top, so we turned around after a while and went back into town. I definitely recommend hiking the first section just for the views of Kotor, it’s beautiful from above.

One thing you’ll notice while you’re in Kotor is that there are cats everywhere. Cats are considered a symbol of good luck in Kotor. You’ll see cats in the streets, laying in peoples windows, sitting on store shelves, etc. I love kittens so I thought it was cute!

After Kotor, the tour continues on to Budva. We read a lot of reviews from other tourists and decided to just have a nice relaxing lunch in Budva. We didn’t do as much walking around in Budva because we were exhausted from our hike in Kotor. After Budva, we loaded the bus and drove back to Dubrovnik. It was a long day!!

DAY THREE
I recommend renting jet ski’s from Gari Transfer for your third day in Dubrovnik!! Be sure to book them in advance, they book up fast!! We called them the day before to confirm our reservation and pick up time. Yes, they’ll pick you up at Pile Gate and drop you off once you’re done. Super easy!

Our third day in Dubrovnik was my favorite! We rode the jet ski around Lokrum and then along the city walls of Dubrovnik. I loved looking at the city from the water, the walls are just so grande! We then road over to the blue caves and did a little snorkeling. I saw a picture of the blue caves on Pinterest a few years ago and it’s been on my bucket list ever since. We packed our own snorkeling gear but you might be able to find some to buy/rent in town. If you’re not sure how to find the Blue Caves, the workers at Gari’s Transfer have a map available for you to use.

Once you’ve finished checking out the blue caves, then head over to Sunj Beach. According to the locals, Sunj Beach is one of the nicest sandy beaches in Croatia. We spent hours just relaxing at the beach. We had the perfect weather and the water felt great!! I recommend bringing some cash with you so you can reserve a lounger and grab some refreshments from the little hotel bar.

That evening enjoy the sunset from Buza Bar. You’ll need to arrive about an hour before sunset because they are super popular! We never made it back in time to find seats available at Buza Bar but I’ve heard it’s the best place to watch the sunset in Dubrovnik.
DAY FOUR
On your fourth day in Dubrovnik, I recommend booking a Day Trip to Bosnia. Now this tour was AMAZING!! Again they picked us up just outside of Pile Gate and drove us to Stanica Ravno, our first stop of the day. We enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and took a little restroom break before continuing on to Mostar.

When we arrived in Mostar the guide told us all about the history as we walked through town and then took us to a Turkish House. I wish we would’ve skipped the Turkish House part of the tour because I felt like it wasted our time. We really didn’t get to spend very long in Mostar, I definitely could’ve spent several hours there. The food was amazing and there were so many cute shops!

After a few hours in Mostar, we loaded the bus and continued to Kravice Waterfalls.

What a sight!! It’s a little bit of a hike down to the waterfalls but they’re gorgeous!! The water was super cold so I didn’t get in all the way but it was nice to dip my feet in for a bit. Plus it was breathtaking!! One of the prettiest places I’ve ever been!!

Enjoy your last night in Dubrovnik at one of the amazing restaurants in Old Town Dubrovnik. On our last evening in Durbrovnik, Croatia was playing in the semi-finals for the World Cup!! They had the game projected in the town square and everyone was out celebrating, what a great way to end our trip in Croatia!!

Where to stay in Dubrovnik?
Location is key when booking your accommodations for Dubrovnik!! I 100% recommend staying either in Old Town Dubrovnik or just outside of the city walls. It’s more expensive to stay in Old Town Dubrovnik, but I think the experience is worth it. We stayed in Old Town Dubrovnik, which allowed us to truly enjoy the city. We would eat at a local bakery on Stradun every morning and enjoy dinner at a local café once the cruise ships left for the day.
It was really hard to find a reasonably priced place in Old Town Dubrovnik but we eventually found Rooms Kazerma. It was a tiny room but we only needed a place to shower and sleep. I can not stress to you how tiny the room was but it served it’s purpose.

Now if you decide to stay in Old Town Dubrovnik, then be prepared for LOTS and LOTS of stairs!! I think we climbed maybe 8 flights of stairs to get to Rooms Kazerma. Old Town Dubrovnik is shaped like a stadium so everything along the main street is like level one and then as the streets go north or south they go up!! Basically with every street you go up another flight of stairs. Not gonna lie it was hard carrying up all of our luggage!!

How long to stay in Dubrovnik?
We stayed for 4 full days, but we could’ve easily just done two or three. It just depends on how many day trips you’d like to take. I’d say plan for 2 days in Dubrovnik (Day 1 and Day 3 discussed above) and then add on for how many day trips you’d like to take. If you’re only going to stay for 3 days then I’d do Day 1, Day 3, and Day 4 discussed above (skip the Montenegro day trip).

How to get around Dubrovnik?
I’m going to start by saying do NOT rent a car!! It’s so hard to find parking around town and you really have to know where you’re going. There are lots of one way streets and it seems like a maze sometimes. Lots of businesses and tours will pick you up at your hotel. Everyone either picked us up at Pile Gate or at the Hilton hotel just a block away, so there’s no need to rent a car!!

We also used the bus to get from the ferry to Pile Gate and then we used a taxi to get from Pile Gate to the airport. You’ve probably heard me talking about Pile Gate a lot in this post, it’s one of the main gates into Old Town Dubrovnik. Cars can’t get inside the city wall so that’s why we had to get picked up at Pile Gate every day.
