DIY Baby Sensory Ribbon Box: A Simple, Affordable Toy for Curious Little Hands

Create your own DIY baby sensory ribbon box using a diaper box and colorful ribbons! This easy, budget-friendly activity supports fine motor skills, sensory exploration, and independent play for babies 6 months and up.

Why Sensory Play Matters for Babies

Sensory play is one of the most important ways babies learn about the world around them. Through touch, sight, and movement, babies build connections in their developing brains that support motor skills, focus, and problem-solving. Activities that encourage grasping, pulling, and exploring textures are especially beneficial during the first year — when those fine motor muscles are growing fast!

That’s where a DIY Baby Sensory Ribbon Box comes in. It’s fun, inexpensive, and endlessly engaging. Best of all, you can make it in under 30 minutes using materials you already have at home.

The Perfect Age Range

This activity is ideal for babies around 5-8 months old — basically when they can start grasping objects. Younger babies will enjoy simply watching the ribbons move, while older ones will work on pulling, twisting, and tugging as their coordination improves.

Once our son was old enough to sit on his own, we would place him inside the box. We ALWAYS sat right next to him (obviously). He enjoyed sitting inside the box and being surrounded by the ribbons! If you’re box isn’t big enough for them to sit inside, that’s totally fine. They’ll still have lots of fun pulling on the ribbons.

Why Parents Love It

  • Promotes fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
  • Encourages independent play and focus
  • Provides a safe, engaging way to explore colors and textures

What You’ll Need

  • 1 empty LARGE diaper box (or any small, sturdy cardboard box). We buy our diapers from Costco so we have LARGE diaper boxes. It’s probably best if your box is plain (an Amazon box would be perfect). If your box is colorful, it will be harder for your baby to see the ribbon. You want the ribbon to stand out and be easily visible.
  • A drill or scissors (for making holes)
  • Assorted ribbons in different colors, textures, and widths (Hobby Lobby has a great little bag of ribbon scraps and sometimes you can find it on sale for like $3).
  • Scissors (for cutting ribbon to size)
  • Duck Tape

How to Make Your Ribbon Box

  1. Prepare your box. Remove any tape or loose cardboard so it’s safe for your baby to handle.
  2. Duck Tape any areas where the cardboard is loose. I cut off the top of my box so I decided to duck tape around the top. I didn’t want any little pieces of cardboard coming off and becoming a choking hazard to my baby.
  3. Add holes. Carefully drill or punch holes on the sides of the box. Make sure the holes are big enough to easily pull the ribbon through.
  4. Thread the ribbons. Cut the ribbon to length. The length can vary but I wouldn’t make the ribbon longer than 12 inches (there’s no need for it to be super long). Then thread the ribbon through a hole. Tie knots on both sides of the ribbon so it can’t be pulled out. Repeat this process for every hole.
  5. Secure and play! Make sure everything feels sturdy, and give each ribbon a gentle tug before letting your baby explore.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need fancy toys to keep your baby happy and learning — sometimes, the best activities are the simplest. A DIY sensory ribbon box turns everyday materials into hours of safe, developmentally rich play. It’s the perfect example of how a little creativity can spark big smiles and even bigger learning moments.
